What is an online community platform? It is software that gives your people one place to post, talk and find each other, under your name. A feed for posts. Groups for each subject. And a profile for every member. Most communities start somewhere borrowed. A social page, where the platform decides who sees each post. A chat app, where last week has already scrolled away. Or a hosted platform, where you pay rent every month and the members sit on its list, not yours. In all three, the community is real, but the ground under it belongs to someone else. Good community software does six jobs. A feed, groups and member profiles. Private messages, notifications that bring people back, and moderation that keeps the place safe. Here are all six, running on a WordPress site you could build yourself. This is a group for a running club. A member votes in a poll, and the result updates for everyone. Photos get comments and reactions, the way people already expect. And every group keeps its own list of members. Members find each other in a directory they can search, by name or by interest, and connect with one click. They talk in private messages, on your site, not in another app. And notifications tell them when someone replies, so they come back. On WordPress, this is a plugin. You install it, answer a few setup questions, like who is allowed to join, create a group for each subject, and invite your people in. As the owner, you see every member in your own dashboard. You can export that list any day, because it is your data. Every group is managed from one screen. And when a member reports a post, it lands in a review queue, with a strike system for repeat problems. Because it is your own site, the platform can grow. Add a forum, courses or events. A job board, a business directory, or points and badges. Each one is a plugin on the same site, so members never need a second account. A forum keeps answers where people can search for them. Courses sit next to the community, on the same login. And events come with registration and a list of who is coming. Side by side. Rent every month, or a free plugin on hosting you already have. Their address, or your own domain. Their member list, or yours. The features they choose, or the ones you decide to add. Every month a community spends on borrowed ground, more of its history is somewhere you cannot take with you. BuddyNext is the free community plugin for WordPress.
