BuddyNext - community engine for WordPress

BuddyNext vs Mighty Networks Migrate

Migration guide

Migrate from Mighty Networks to BuddyNext.

Our team moves your Mighty Networks community onto your own WordPress site for you: members, spaces, posts and comments, events, courses and plans, pulled through the Mighty Networks API and rebuilt on BuddyNext, Learnomy, Eventonomy and WPMediaVerse. Members are matched by the email they already use, so their profile, spaces and courses are waiting when they sign in.

Done for you

What our team moves from Mighty Networks.

This is the done-for-you route. The team pulls your network through the Mighty Networks API, so the only things you hand over are an API key (generated in your Mighty admin) and your network id.

  • Members, with their profile fields, the answers they gave to your questions, their avatars, badges and tags.
  • Every space and who belongs to it. Each one becomes a BuddyNext space with its own feed, members and moderators.
  • The conversation: posts, polls, comments, reactions and answers to questions, with the formatting cleaned so nothing shows up as raw code or a broken link in the new feed.
  • Events and RSVPs, onto Eventonomy, with dates and time zones checked after the move.
  • Courses with their lessons, onto Learnomy, including the lesson videos and links that point at them.
  • Images and documents linked from posts and lessons, downloaded into your own media library through WPMediaVerse.
  • Plans and who is on them. Members are seated on the matching membership plan from your payment records at cutover, which opens their spaces and enrols them in the courses that plan includes.

The honest part

What does not move, and why.

A short list, and none of it is hidden. Each item is a limit of what Mighty Networks lets anyone take out, or a decision that is yours to make.

  • Direct messages. Mighty Networks has no API for them, so there is nothing to pull. Members start new conversations on the new site, where messages are part of the stack from day one.
  • Mighty's own hosted videos. Videos stored on Mighty Networks stay as links rather than being re-uploaded, unless you ask for them to be moved.
  • Files that nothing links to. Documents are found by reading every post and lesson, so a file sitting in a Files tab without a link is pulled separately once we know it is there.
  • Plan prices. Mighty Networks does not report them reliably, so you confirm the price and billing period of every plan.

Rather do it yourself? You can export your member lists from Mighty Networks, invite people with the free plugin's CSV invites and rebuild the spaces that matter. The Mighty Networks alternative guide covers that route. For most communities with history worth keeping, the done-for-you move is the faster one: tell us about yours.

Same jobs, friendlier names

Your Mighty Networks vocabulary, translated.

Where each Mighty Networks concept lands in BuddyNext, and which tier it needs.

  • Mighty NetworksSpaces BuddyNextSpaces Each space has its own feed, members, rules and moderators, with open, private or secret visibility.
  • Mighty NetworksPlans BuddyNextMembership plans Pro plans can open one or several spaces, with Stripe or PayPal checkout and coupons.
  • Mighty NetworksCourses BuddyNextLearnomy courses A separate LMS plugin from the same team; the bridge to BuddyNext is in Pro.
  • Mighty NetworksEvents BuddyNextEventonomy events Events members RSVP to without leaving the feed; the bridge ships with Pro.

No fairy tales

Your move, step by step.

How our team runs a Mighty Networks move, from the first count to the day the new site goes live.

  1. 1Count what is there. A read-only census of members, spaces, posts, events, courses and plans, so the job is sized before anything moves.
  2. 2Agree the structure. Which Mighty spaces become which BuddyNext spaces, and which plan opens what. You approve this map before anything is imported.
  3. 3Build the foundation on staging. Spaces, membership plans, Learnomy courses and the Eventonomy calendar are created on a staging copy of your site.
  4. 4Pull and import everything. Members first, then spaces, posts, polls, events, RSVPs, courses, comments, reactions and answers. Each stage can be re-run without making duplicates.
  5. 5Clean and repair. Formatting flattened, old Mighty links rewritten so they do not break after cutover, media placed, event dates checked.
  6. 6Check it as a member. The feed, an event, a course and a member's access are checked while signed in as a real member, with and without a plan, not as an admin.
  7. 7Cut over. A final catch-up pull brings anything posted during the move, email and name changes are synced, members are seated on their plans, and the site goes live.

Moving off Mighty Networks, specifically

What is different about this move.

People usually leave Mighty Networks for ownership: a platform fee on every member payment, and a community that lives on someone else's infrastructure. On WordPress the members, posts and rules sit in your own database, and the only fee on payments is your card processor's. The honest trade is that courses and the branded app work differently here.

  • Mighty Networks has a white-label native app on its custom tier. BuddyNext offers an installable web app on Free and web push on Pro; there is no native app to replace it with today. If a published app is why your members stay, weigh that first.
  • Courses are a separate plugin here, Learnomy, and the bridge that posts completions and certificates to the feed is in BuddyNext Pro.
  • Plans and prices are your call. Mighty Networks does not report reliable plan prices through its API, so you confirm the price and billing period of every plan before members are seated on them.

Why it is worth it

What you get once you have moved.

  • Mighty Networks bundles community and courses as a hosted product; BuddyNext is a whole platform built in-house by one team - forums, events, a job board, a marketplace, and gamification alongside community and courses - and you own the whole thing on your own site instead of renting it.
  • Mighty has restructured its plans and per-sale fees more than once. With BuddyNext your members, posts, and content sit in your own WordPress database, so a pricing change on Mighty's side cannot reach the community you have built.
  • No per-member monthly fee and no platform cut of your revenue. You pay for hosting and an optional Pro license, not a percentage of every transaction on top of Stripe.
  • Launch a working community on the free core with no key and no expiry. Mighty has no free plan, so there is a bill before you have a single member.

Sandbox demo

Try it on a live demo community

One click builds a private copy of our demo community, with members, spaces and posts already in it. InstaWP asks for an email to create it, it lasts four hours, and nobody else sees what you change.

Prefer to watch first? See the tutorials.

What to try in the demo

  1. Open a space and look at its privacy setting and member roles, the closest match to a Mighty Space.
  2. Open the activity feed and a member profile, the two screens your members will judge first.
  3. Open the admin side and look at the Members area, where the CSV invites and the member export live.

The questions you are asking

Migration questions, answered honestly.

What do you need from me to start?

Two things: a Mighty Networks API key, which you generate in your Mighty admin, and your network id. We also need access to the WordPress site the community is moving to. Nothing else about your Mighty account is needed.

Will my members have to sign up again?

No new profile is needed. Each member is matched by the email they used on Mighty Networks, so their profile, their spaces and their courses are already in place on the new site when they sign in.

Do direct messages come across?

No. Mighty Networks has no API for direct messages, so they cannot be pulled by anyone. Members start new conversations on the new site, where direct messages come with the stack.

What happens to paying members?

At cutover each member is seated on the plan your payment records show, which opens their spaces and enrols them in the courses that plan includes. You confirm every plan price first, because Mighty Networks does not report prices reliably.

Can people keep posting on Mighty while you move it?

Yes. The import runs on a staging copy, and at cutover a catch-up pull brings across everything posted since the main import, so nothing from the last few days is lost.

How do I start?

Tell us about your community through the contact page: roughly how many members, spaces and courses, and whether members pay. We reply within one to two business days and tell you what the move looks like for you before anything starts.

Ready to move your community?

Move it yourself with the free plugin on a staging copy, or hand the move to our team. Tell us where your community lives today and we will reply within one to two business days.
