Build an Online Community You Own: Feed, Courses, Events and Forums

Video 1 of 6 · 4:05 · captions included

Most communities are scattered across a chat app, a course platform and an events tool, with the members on a list you rent. This film follows one member, Yuki, through a week in a community where the feed, forums, courses, events and jobs all live on one site that the owner fully controls.

This is Yuki. She joined this community to find people to run with. Three weeks later she has a running group, a new skill and a job lead. All of it happened in one place. Most communities are not one place. The conversation lives in a chat app. The courses live on a second platform. Events are on a third. And the members, the people who matter most, sit on a list you rent from someone else. Every tool has its own login, its own fee and its own idea of who your members are. So the community you built ends up scattered, and none of it is really yours. Here is what it looks like when it all lives together, on your own site. It starts in the feed. Yuki follows the Trail Runners space, so Saturday's route poll is the first thing she sees. She votes, adds a photo from her last run, and by evening six people have replied. Nothing to learn. It works the way a feed should. The poll becomes a plan. The Weekly Run Club is an event in the same community, so she registers in one tap, and it shows on her profile and in her friends' feeds. On Saturday morning, twenty-three people know where to be. After the run she has a question: which shoes for wet rock? She asks in the forum, where a question stays findable instead of scrolling away. Noor answers within the hour. Yuki marks it as the answer, and the next runner with the same question finds it in seconds. Running is not the only reason she is here. Yuki wants to start a small community of her own, for illustrators, and the academy has a course on exactly that. The lessons are short videos. Her progress is saved. When she finishes, the certificate lands on her profile, and the community hears about it. And people notice her. Lucia is hiring a designer and posts the role on the community job board. Yuki applies with the profile she has already built. And all along, every post, answer and lesson has been adding up. Points. Badges. A place on the leaderboard. Being a good member is finally visible. Now step behind it. Marcus runs this community, and everything Yuki just did, he can see and shape from one dashboard. Who joined this week. Which spaces are busy. What needs a moderator's eye. He decides what is free and what is for paying members, and the payments come to him. The members, the content and the data sit on his own website. If he wants something to work differently, he can change it. Nobody else sets the rules, and nobody can switch his community off. Yuki does not think about any of this. She just has one place where her people are. That is what we build. The feed, the forums, the courses, the events and the jobs, made by one team to work as one community. On WordPress. On your site. See it live. The demo is one click away. BuddyNext. Your community, finally your own.
