In this tutorial you will choose your notification preferences in BuddyNext. Each member decides what notifies them, and how it reaches them. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin. One switch shown here needs BuddyNext Pro, and the voice says which. It takes about three minutes. There are six steps. Open your preferences. Switch a whole channel. Set each type. Quiet a busy space. Save your choices. Then set the defaults for new members. Step one. Open your preferences. Sign in as a member, open Settings from the side menu, and click the Notifications tab. The page has three boxes. Channels, Activity types, and further down, Spaces you are in. Step two. Switch a whole channel. A channel is a way a notification reaches you. In-app is the bell and the Notifications page. Email is on as well. Turn a channel off, and every type goes quiet on that channel at once. Play a sound is the only one that starts off. With BuddyNext Pro there is a fourth card, Newsletters and announcements. It stops the broadcast emails sent to the whole community. Step three. Set each type. Activity types lists every kind of notification, in groups such as Follows and connections, and Feed activity. Each row has an In-app switch. Turn it off, and that type stops showing on the bell and in your list. Some rows read In-app only. Reactions on your posts is one. They never send an email. On the other rows, Email has four choices. Immediate, Daily, Weekly, or Off. Daily and Weekly collect that type into one digest email. Step four. Quiet a busy space. Scroll to Spaces you are in. Every space you belong to has its own row. Choose All activity, Mentions only, or None for each space. These three buttons save the moment you click one. Step five. Save your choices. At the very bottom of the page is a button, Reset every type to defaults. It puts everything back the way the site set it. Change a switch or an Email choice, and a bar appears at the bottom. Unsaved changes, with a Save changes button. Nothing is kept until you click it. Step six. Set the defaults for new members. In your WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, then Notifications. The first box is Default notification preferences. It has six switches, from New follower to New space member. All six start on. Each one is the starting In-app choice for members who have not changed that type themselves. Once a member saves their own choice, theirs wins. That is all six. Your preferences opened, a channel switched, each type set, a busy space quieted, your choices saved, and the defaults set for new members. Your notifications now reach you the way you want them. Next in this series: Set up your community emails.
