In this tutorial you will send a direct message in BuddyNext. A direct message is a private conversation between two members. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin, and MediaVerse, the free plugin that stores and delivers the messages. It takes about three minutes. There are six steps. Open Messages. Start a new message. Write and send it. Read a conversation. Choose who can message you. Then set the rules for the site. Step one. Open Messages. Sign in as a member. The speech bubbles icon in the header opens Messages, and so does Messages in the side menu. On the left is every conversation you are in, newest first, with the last line of each. Three tabs sit above the list. All, Unread, and Message requests. Step two. Start a new message. Under the list is a button, New message. Click it, and a box opens. Type a name to find the member you want. Click the member, and an empty conversation opens, ready for your first message. You can start from a profile as well. Every member profile has a Message button that opens the same conversation. Step three. Write and send it. Type in the box at the bottom, where it says Type a message. Left of the box are two small buttons. The face inserts an emoji, and the paperclip, Attach photo, adds a picture to the message. Then click the arrow button, Send message, or press Enter. The message appears in the conversation, and the other member gets a notification. Step four. Read a conversation. Click a conversation in the list to open it. Your own messages sit on the right, and the other member is on the left. Opening a conversation marks it as read. To answer, type in the same box at the bottom. At the top, the name shows who you are talking to, and whether they are online. Step five. Choose who can message you. Open Settings, then the Privacy tab, and find Who can message me. There are four choices. Everyone, People who follow you, People you follow back, and No one. With People who follow you, a message from anyone else waits under Message requests. And a member you have blocked can never message you. Step six. Set the rules for the site. In your WordPress admin, open MediaVerse, then Settings, then Messages. The first box, Turn on private messages, is ticked by default. Untick it, and messaging is hidden everywhere. Existing conversations are kept, and come back when you turn it on again. Who can send messages is the widest choice any member may have. It starts at Everyone, and a member can only pick the same or stricter. That is all six. Messages opened, a new message started, written and sent, a conversation read, your own limit chosen, and the rules set for the site. Your members can now talk in private without leaving your community. Next in this series: See your notifications.
