How to add advanced profile fields in BuddyNext, step by step. BuddyNext Pro adds four field types to BuddyNext, then Members, then Directory, then Profile Fields: Date (extended), Location (map), Multi-select (advanced) and Number (advanced). A Number (advanced) has a unit label and a minimum, maximum and step; a Multi-select (advanced) has its own list of choices. If you sell membership plans, the Advanced Profile Fields switch on a plan decides which members can fill these fields in. Members fill them in on Edit Profile, and the values show on the About tab of the profile.

In this tutorial you will add advanced profile fields in BuddyNext. They let a profile hold a number with a unit, several choices from a list, a place on a map, or a date. You need BuddyNext Pro. The four advanced field types are a Pro feature. It takes about three minutes. There are six steps. Open Profile Fields. Pick an advanced type. Set its options. Choose which plans can fill it. Fill it in as a member. Then see it on the profile. Step one. Open Profile Fields. In the WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, Members, then Directory, and click the tab named Profile Fields. The fields are kept in groups, such as Basic Info and Skills. Each group has its own button, Add field. Step two. Pick an advanced type. Click Add field in a group, and open the list named Field type. BuddyNext Pro adds four types at the end. Date extended, Location with a map, Multi-select advanced, and Number advanced. Plan-gated means your default membership plan does not include them. Choose Number advanced, and its options appear in the same panel. A Unit label, and a Min, Max and Step. Give the field a name, choose who it is visible to, then click Save changes at the foot of the panel. Step three. Set its options. Click the pencil on a field to open Edit field. A Number advanced has a Unit label, shown after the number, and a Min, Max and Step. A number below the Min, above the Max, or off the Step is refused when the member saves. A Multi-select advanced has Options, one on each line. Members can pick several. Then click Save changes. Step four. Choose which plans can fill it. If you sell membership plans, open Monetization, Plans, and edit a plan. Find the switch named Advanced Profile Fields. Members on a plan with this switch on can fill in the advanced fields. Other members see the field but cannot fill it in. Administrators always can. Step five. Fill it in as a member. Sign in as a member, open Edit Profile, and scroll to the group. The number field has its unit beside it. The multi-select is a list. Hold Control, or Command on a Mac, and click to pick more than one. Each field has its own list for who can see it, from Public down to Only me. Step six. See it on the profile. Open the member's profile and click About. The number shows with its unit. Eight years. The choices show as separate tags. English, Spanish and French. That is all six. Profile Fields opened, an advanced type picked, its options set, the plans that can fill it chosen, the field filled in as a member, and the result seen on the profile. Your profiles can now hold the details your community cares about. Next in this series: Find members with advanced search.
