How to show a profile field only when it applies in BuddyNext, step by step. Conditional logic for profile fields is a BuddyNext Pro feature. On BuddyNext, then Members, then Directory, then Profile Fields, open a field's Edit panel, tick Only show this field when, pick the field that decides (a Dropdown, Radio, Multi-select, Yes / No or Member Type field), choose is or is not, and tick the answers. On Edit Profile the field shows and hides the moment the member changes the answer, a hidden field is never required, and an answer left in a hidden field is removed when the profile is saved.

In this tutorial you will show a profile field only when it applies, in BuddyNext. A follow-up question appears only for members whose earlier answer makes it relevant. You need BuddyNext Pro. Conditional logic for profile fields is a Pro feature. It takes about three minutes. There are five steps. Open Profile Fields. Add the rule. Check the field list. Answer as a member. Then see it on the profile. Step one. Open Profile Fields. In the WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, Members, then Directory, and click the tab named Profile Fields. You need one field whose answer decides. It can be a Dropdown, a Radio, a Multi-select, a Yes / No or a Member Type field. Here it is Mentoring, a Dropdown. Step two. Add the rule. Click the pencil on the field you want to show only sometimes. In Edit field, tick the box named Only show this field when. Pick the field that decides. The list only offers fields that can decide and are always shown. Choose is, or is not, then tick one or more answers. The field shows when the member's answer matches. The line underneath reads the rule back in plain words. Then click Save changes, at the foot of the panel. Step three. Check the field list. A field with a rule carries the badge Conditional logic. Rest the pointer on the badge to read its rule. The field that decides is always shown, so it cannot have a rule of its own. Its Edit panel says so. If that field is ever deleted, the rule stops applying, and the other field is shown to everyone. No member is blocked. Step four. Answer as a member. Sign in as a member and open Edit Profile. Mentoring is set to I can mentor others, so the field Mentoring topics is showing. Change the answer to Not right now, and the extra field goes away at once. No save and no reload. Change it back, and the field returns. A hidden field is never required. And when the member saves, an answer left in a hidden field is removed. Step five. See it on the profile. Open the profile and click About. Mentoring topics shows under Mentoring, like any other field. On the profile of a member who has not answered Mentoring, neither line is there. That is all five. Profile Fields opened, the rule added, the field list checked, the question answered as a member, and the result seen on the profile. Your profile forms now ask only what applies. Next in this series: Set up auto-moderation rules.
