BuddyNext - community engine for WordPress

Compare Youzify

BuddyPress add-on (profiles and community UI)

BuddyNext vs Youzify

A BuddyPress add-on (formerly Youzer) that restyles profiles, directories and the activity stream, with a large settings panel, profile widgets and extras like badges and social login. It needs BuddyPress installed and active.

Youzify is a BuddyPress add-on, and there are real reasons to pick it. We name them below, not just the parts where BuddyNext comes out ahead.

Cover every base

Everything’s a module you switch on.

This is the real difference. With BuddyNext every capability below installs free and switches on like a module - one platform, one team, all built to work together. With Youzify, the bases it doesn’t cover mean hunting down a third-party plugin from another maker and hoping it fits.

  • Activity feed & community Youzify Built in (via BuddyPress activity) BuddyNext Included
  • Member profiles & directory Youzify Built in (core strength) BuddyNext Included
  • Forums & discussions Youzify Third-party plugin (bbPress) BuddyNext Included

“Included” means a free BuddyNext module you switch on from the same team, not a separate product to source and license. Some modules have an optional Pro tier; the core is free. Verify Youzify’s current feature set on their own site.

Credit where it's due

Where Youzify is the better choice.

No hand-waving. These are real strengths, and for some communities they are the deciding factor.

  • Profile design is its focus. Youzify gives members configurable profile widgets, cover and header styles and a very large options panel, which is hard to match if a distinctive profile page is your main goal.
  • If you already run BuddyPress, Youzify drops on top of it in minutes without moving any data, so it is the lowest-effort way to make an existing BuddyPress site look modern.
  • Its free core already lists points and badges, verified badges, social login and a words filter for activity, which many BuddyPress sites otherwise buy separately.
  • A sizeable following among BuddyPress site owners: 5,000+ active installs and a 96% rating from nearly 200 reviews on WordPress.org.
  • It works with nearly every WordPress theme according to its FAQ, so it rarely forces a theme change on a BuddyPress site.

The case for BuddyNext

Where BuddyNext is the better choice.

And here is the other side - where owning your community and building on WordPress pays off.

  • Youzify is a layer on top of BuddyPress, so you inherit BuddyPress's templates, tables and limits. BuddyNext is its own community engine and does not need BuddyPress at all.
  • The last Youzify release on WordPress.org was in March 2026 and its metadata lists PHP 5.6 as the minimum. BuddyNext is built for current WordPress and PHP and ships regularly.
  • BuddyNext ships community, forums, courses, events, a job board, a marketplace and gamification in-house from one team, where a BuddyPress site reaches the same list by stacking plugins from many makers.
  • A moderation queue and safeguards sit in the free core, rather than a forbidden-words filter on activity posts.
  • API-first: a full REST API ships in the free tier, so a custom front end or companion app is a first-class path.
  • Gated and tiered spaces for monetization, packaged in one license. A native app is in development and will be priced separately.

The whole platform, in one plugin

Everything BuddyNext gives you, in one plugin.

Most alternatives cover a slice of this, or send you assembling third-party add-ons from other makers to get the rest. BuddyNext ships the whole platform - 74+ features across 11 areas - built by one team, so it all works together instead of just sitting side by side. Here is the full surface, not a footnote.

Pro marks a Pro-tier feature. Everything else is in the free plugin.

What to try in the demo

  1. Open the activity feed and write a post, add a poll and reply in a thread, the daily loop your members will use.
  2. Open the member directory and a profile, then compare them with your Youzify profile pages.
  3. Open the admin side and look at the moderation queue and settings, the controls you would run day to day.

Honest answers

Questions buyers ask first.

BuddyNext or Youzify: which should I choose?

Choose Youzify if you already run BuddyPress, it works for you, and the thing you want is a better-looking profile and activity experience. Youzify gives you that on top of what you have, with no migration. Choose BuddyNext if you would rather not build on BuddyPress at all, or you want forums, courses, events and moderation to come from one team with a REST API. You can bring your BuddyPress data across with the free importer.

Does Youzify need BuddyPress?

Yes. Youzify's own FAQ on WordPress.org says it is based on BuddyPress and requires BuddyPress to be installed and active. It is an add-on that restyles and extends BuddyPress. BuddyNext does not need BuddyPress.

Is Youzify still maintained?

As of October 2026 the WordPress.org page shows version 1.3.7, last updated 15 March 2026, tested up to WordPress 6.9.11, with 5,000+ active installs. That is a release within the past year but not a recent one, so check the support forum and changelog before you commit.

Can I move from Youzify to BuddyNext?

Youzify keeps community data in BuddyPress tables, and the free BuddyNext Importer reads BuddyPress. Profile fields, groups as spaces, activity, friendships and follows can come across, with forums needing Jetonomy and media needing WPMediaVerse. Youzify's own widget layouts and settings are not something the importer reads, so expect to rebuild those. Rehearse on staging first.

Is Youzify free?

The core plugin is free on WordPress.org, and its page says the core features stay free. A Pro edition is sold separately through CodeCanyon. Check youzify.com for current terms. BuddyNext has a complete free tier with community features built in, and an optional Pro license on top.

Which has better profile pages?

Youzify, if profile design is your priority. Its widget-based profile builder and options panel are its strength. BuddyNext has member profiles and a directory in the free core but is aimed at the whole community, not at profile styling.
