In this tutorial you will mention a member in BuddyNext. A mention links their name in your post or comment, and sends them a notification. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin. Mentions always work. There is no switch for them. It takes about three minutes. There are five steps. Mention a member. Read a mention. Find where you were mentioned. Choose who can mention you. Then set the default notice. Step one. Mention a member. Sign in as a member, and write a post. Type an at sign, then the first letters of a name, with no space between them. A short list of matching members opens. Each row shows the name, and the handle that goes into the post. Click the member you mean. You can mention more than one person, and it works the same way in a comment. Step two. Read a mention. In this post, another member has mentioned the member we are signed in as. The handle is a link to her profile, for everyone who reads the post. A handle is the short name under a member's display name. It has to match a real member. A name that matches nobody still shows as a link, but nobody is told. Step three. Find where you were mentioned. Open Notifications, and click the Mentions tab. Each mention is a row that names who wrote it. Open takes you to the post. You are not notified when you mention yourself, or when the writer is someone you have blocked. Step four. Choose who can mention you. Open Settings, then Privacy, and find Who can at mention me. The choices are Members, My connections and Nobody. My connections keeps mention notices to the people you are connected with, and Nobody turns them off. The choice covers comments as well as posts. Others can still type your name, but you are not told. It saves as soon as you change it. Step five. Set the default notice. In your WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, then Notifications. The row for a mention in a post or comment is switched on. So members are told about mentions from the start. Each member can change that in their own notification settings. That is all five. A member mentioned, a mention read, your own mentions found, who can mention you chosen, and the default notice set. Your members can now bring the right person into a conversation by name.
