How to set up content safeguards in BuddyNext, step by step. Under BuddyNext, then Automation, then Controls, then Content safeguards, list banned words and banned hashtags, blocked link domains and blocked IP addresses, and set how many posts and comments a member can make in a minute. Two more rules, Flag duplicate posts and Flag posts from new members, never stop a post: it is published and a report is filed for your moderators. A post that breaks a rule is refused as it is written, and the member is told why.

In this tutorial you will set up content safeguards in BuddyNext. These are rules that check every post and comment at the moment it is written. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin. Every safeguard here is free. It takes about three minutes. There are six steps. Open Content safeguards. Ban words and hashtags. Block links and addresses. Limit how fast members post. Flag posts for a second look. Then see a post refused. Step one. Open Content safeguards. In your WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, then Automation. The Controls tab opens first. Scroll down to the box named Content safeguards. Every rule in it starts empty or generous, so nothing is blocked until you say so. Step two. Ban words and hashtags. In Banned words, write one word or phrase on each line. A post or comment that uses one is refused, and the member is told why. Only whole words match, so banning art does not block start. Add a star to the end of a word to catch its longer forms too. Banned hashtags works the same way for tags. Write each one without the hash sign. Step three. Block links and addresses. Blocked link domains takes one domain on each line. A post that links to one of them is refused. Blocked I P addresses is the widest rule. A listed address cannot sign in, register, post or comment at all. Your own address cannot be added. Step four. Limit how fast members post. Post rate limit is the most posts one member can publish in a minute. It starts at ten. Past the limit, the member is asked to wait a moment. Moderators and administrators are not held by it. Comment rate limit is counted on its own. A new site starts at thirty a minute. Untick its box, as here, and comments have no limit. Step five. Flag posts for a second look. The last two rules never stop a post. Both are off until you tick them. Flag duplicate posts catches the same text posted twice within the minutes you set. The post still goes live, and a report is filed for your moderators. Flag posts from new members does the same for a member's first few posts. Nothing in BuddyNext waits for approval before it is seen. Step six. See a post refused. Now sign in as a member. On this site, the phrase free followers is banned. Here a member writes a post that uses it, and clicks Post. The post is not published. A message says it contains a word that is not allowed here. The member can change the wording and post again. That is all six. Content safeguards opened, words and hashtags banned, links and addresses blocked, posting speed limited, two flags set, and a post refused. The most common problems are now stopped before anyone has to report them. Next in this series: Appoint community moderators.
