BuddyNext - community engine for WordPress

Compare Flarum alternative

Self-hosted open-source forum (standalone PHP app)

Looking for a Flarum alternative?

Both are self-hosted, so this is not an escape from rented land. The question is whether the forum should be its own PHP application or sit inside your WordPress site. Flarum is lean and free, and this page is fair to it.

The move, in short

Data ownership
Flarum Full - your server, your database
BuddyNext Full - your database, your server
Hosting
Flarum Self-host the app; needs PHP 8.3+
BuddyNext Self-hosted on your WordPress

The honest reasons

Why people look for a Flarum alternative.

Flarum is free, MIT-licensed forum software on its own PHP stack, with version 2 as the current stable line. People look past it when their website is WordPress and they want the community to share its theme, users and plugins.

  • It is a separate application, so you host, secure and update it next to your WordPress site.
  • Members get a second account unless you connect the two systems.
  • Extending it means Flarum extensions, not the WordPress plugin and theme ecosystem.
  • Beyond the forum, features such as courses, events and a marketplace mean more tools to add and connect.
  • If you want SEO, page builders and e-commerce around the community, those live in WordPress, not in Flarum.

None of this means Flarum is a bad product - for plenty of communities it is the right call. These are simply the friction points that send people looking, stated fairly.

The case for BuddyNext

Why BuddyNext is a strong Flarum alternative.

BuddyNext is a self-hosted community platform for WordPress. The whole idea is the opposite of renting: you own the data, you pay for hosting instead of a platform cut, and you start free. Here is where that pays off against Flarum.

  • Flarum is a forum. BuddyNext is a community: activity feed, spaces, profiles and moderation, with forums from Jetonomy (the bridge is in BuddyNext Free), plus courses, events, a job board and a marketplace from the same team.
  • It lives inside WordPress, so members use the same login, theme and database as the rest of your site. Flarum is a second application with its own accounts to connect.
  • The WordPress ecosystem comes with it: themes, page builders, SEO and e-commerce around the community. Flarum has its own extensions and nothing else.
  • No second stack to run. BuddyNext sits on the PHP and MySQL you already host for WordPress, with no separate Composer-managed app to update beside it.
  • Everyday community features stay in the free tier with no key and nothing that expires, and the REST API is in the free tier too.
  • Monetization through gated, tiered spaces is built into the BuddyNext licence. A native app is in development and will be priced separately.

Not just us

Other alternatives to consider.

We would rather you pick the right home than just pick ours. If BuddyNext is not your fit, these are real options worth a look - each suits a different kind of community.

  • wpForo A forum that lives inside WordPress, if forum-only is enough.
  • Discourse The other well-known open-source forum, also a separate application.
  • BuddyNext A community inside WordPress, with forums from Jetonomy. Flarum's lean forum is simpler if discussion is all you need.

No fairy tales

How to switch - honestly.

Flarum keeps its own database, so there is no importer: the free BuddyNext Importer reads BuddyPress and BuddyBoss only. Plan a rebuild. Export your members' emails, recreate spaces on a staging WordPress site, bulk-invite by CSV and run both for a few weeks. For a forum-only site, Flarum may simply be the right tool: it is free, fast and needs nothing beyond PHP 8.3 and a database.

  1. 1Plan it as a real project. A community move is migration work, not a button. Give it a window and a checklist, not an afternoon and a hope.
  2. 2Export your data first. Pull out your members, content and anything you can from Flarum before you touch the new platform, so nothing depends on access you might lose.
  3. 3Build and test on staging. Stand up BuddyNext on a staging copy of your site, import everything, and check messaging, spaces and access actually work before any member sees it.
  4. 4Cut over and bring people across. Point your domain at the new home, invite your most active members first, and run both in parallel for a short while rather than flipping everyone at once.

Anyone selling you a magic one-click migration off a hosted platform is overselling it. Done as a real project, though, the move is very doable - and you only do it once.

What it costs you

Honestly, where the money goes

Switching costs something either way, so here is our side of it in plain terms rather than only Flarum's.

Free, and it is a working community
Unlimited spaces, a filterable member directory, notifications and the full report-and-moderate queue are all in the free plugin, with direct messages through the free WPMediaVerse companion. It is not a trial that expires or a seat cap you grow into.
One licence, not a shopping list
The usual cost of a self-hosted community is not the plugin, it is the six add-ons you buy to make it a community. Messaging, the member directory, notifications and the moderation queue are in the free BuddyNext plugin rather than priced separately.
Moderation is not an upsell
The report button, the admin review queue, the moderation log, and dismiss, remove, warn, strike and suspend are free. A community with no way to settle an argument is not one, so it is not sold back to you separately.
A lifetime option exists
Pro is $149 a year, or $399 once. Stop renewing and the community keeps running, because the free plugin is what it is built on rather than a crippled version of it.

Flarum pricing: The software is free and open source under the MIT licence, and the project is supported by donations. You pay for your own server. Some community extensions may be paid; check each one. Verify current details on flarum.org.

Sandbox demo

Try it on a live demo community

One click builds a private copy of our demo community, with members, spaces and posts already in it. InstaWP asks for an email to create it, it lasts four hours, and nobody else sees what you change.

Prefer to watch first? See the tutorials.

What to try in the demo

  1. Open the activity feed and write a post, then reply in a thread, the daily loop your members will use.
  2. Open a space and look at who can see and join it, and how forum discussions sit beside the feed.
  3. Open the admin side and look at the moderation queue and settings, the controls you would run day to day.

Switcher questions

Questions people ask before they move.

Is BuddyNext a Flarum alternative for WordPress sites?

Yes, if your website is WordPress. Flarum is a standalone PHP forum you host separately, while BuddyNext is a WordPress plugin, so the community shares your theme, login and plugins. If you only need a lean forum, Flarum is a good fit.

Does BuddyNext have forums like Flarum?

Through Jetonomy, a forums and Q&A plugin from the same team, with the bridge in BuddyNext Free. Flarum is built around discussion alone, so it is the simpler tool for a forum-only site.

How do I move from Flarum to BuddyNext?

There is no importer, because Flarum keeps its own database and the free BuddyNext Importer reads BuddyPress and BuddyBoss only. Export your members' emails, rebuild spaces on a staging WordPress site and send a bulk CSV invite. Run both for a few weeks.

Do both let me own my data?

Yes. Flarum runs on your server with your database, and BuddyNext runs in your WordPress database. Both keep the community on infrastructure you control.

What is the best Flarum alternative?

The main Flarum alternatives are wpForo, Discourse, and BuddyNext. wpForo: A forum that lives inside WordPress, if forum-only is enough. Discourse: The other well-known open-source forum, also a separate application. BuddyNext: A community inside WordPress, with forums from Jetonomy. Flarum's lean forum is simpler if discussion is all you need. The right one depends on what made you look.

Is BuddyNext a good alternative to Flarum?

For people leaving Flarum to own their stack, yes. BuddyNext is self-hosted on WordPress, so your members and content live in your own database, there is no per-month platform fee or cut of your sales, and there is a genuinely complete free tier to start on. The trade is that you (or your host) run WordPress. If you want zero maintenance above all, a hosted option may suit you better - and we say so.

Can I move my community from Flarum to BuddyNext easily?

Be honest with yourself here: plan it as a real project, not a one-click switch. Export your members and content, rebuild on a staging site first, check everything survived the move, then point your domain across and invite people over. Anyone promising a magic one-click migration off a hosted platform is overselling it.

Is BuddyNext cheaper than Flarum?

Usually, over time. BuddyNext has a complete free tier and an optional annual Pro license; your main running cost is your own hosting, with no monthly platform fee and no cut of your revenue. Flarum's ongoing cost depends on its plan and any fees. Run your own numbers, but for a growing community the ownership model tends to win on cost.
