BuddyNext - community engine for WordPress

Compare Flarum

Self-hosted open-source forum (standalone PHP app)

BuddyNext vs Flarum

Free, MIT-licensed forum software written in PHP. Version 2.0 is the current stable line. It is a standalone application you host yourself, not a WordPress plugin, and it is built around discussions, tags and a clean, fast interface.

Flarum is a self-hosted open-source forum, and there are real reasons to pick it. We name them below, not just the parts where BuddyNext comes out ahead.

Cover every base

Everything’s a module you switch on.

This is the real difference. With BuddyNext every capability below installs free and switches on like a module - one platform, one team, all built to work together. With Flarum, the bases it doesn’t cover mean hunting down a third-party plugin from another maker and hoping it fits.

  • Activity feed & community Flarum Discussion list, not a social feed BuddyNext Included
  • Member profiles & directory Flarum Built in BuddyNext Included
  • Forums & discussions Flarum Built in BuddyNext Included

Flarum 3 of 12 built in 9 more you’d bolt on or can’t get
BuddyNext 12 of 12 included every base included; a few have an optional Pro tier

“Included” means a free BuddyNext module you switch on from the same team, not a separate product to source and license. Some modules have an optional Pro tier; the core is free. Verify Flarum’s current feature set on their own site.

Credit where it's due

Where Flarum is the better choice.

No hand-waving. These are real strengths, and for some communities they are the deciding factor.

  • A forum that is only a forum. Flarum is light and quick, with discussions, tags and a modern interface that feels good on a phone, and nothing else to configure.
  • A permissive licence. MIT means you can use and change it freely, and the project says it stays free.
  • Tidy extension model. Hundreds of community extensions add features, and Realtime and Audit, once paid, are now free and bundled with 2.0.
  • Real choice of database. MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite and PostgreSQL are all supported, which BuddyNext on WordPress does not offer.
  • No WordPress to keep patched. If you do not run WordPress at all, Flarum is a complete forum on its own with far less surface to maintain.

The case for BuddyNext

Where BuddyNext is the better choice.

And here is the other side - where owning your community and building on WordPress pays off.

  • Flarum is a forum. BuddyNext is a community: activity feed, spaces, profiles and moderation, with forums from Jetonomy (the bridge is in BuddyNext Free), plus courses, events, a job board and a marketplace from the same team.
  • It lives inside WordPress, so members use the same login, theme and database as the rest of your site. Flarum is a second application with its own accounts to connect.
  • The WordPress ecosystem comes with it: themes, page builders, SEO and e-commerce around the community. Flarum has its own extensions and nothing else.
  • No second stack to run. BuddyNext sits on the PHP and MySQL you already host for WordPress, with no separate Composer-managed app to update beside it.
  • Everyday community features stay in the free tier with no key and nothing that expires, and the REST API is in the free tier too.
  • Monetization through gated, tiered spaces is built into the BuddyNext licence. A native app is in development and will be priced separately.

The whole platform, in one plugin

Everything BuddyNext gives you, in one plugin.

Most alternatives cover a slice of this, or send you assembling third-party add-ons from other makers to get the rest. BuddyNext ships the whole platform - 74+ features across 11 areas - built by one team, so it all works together instead of just sitting side by side. Here is the full surface, not a footnote.

Pro marks a Pro-tier feature. Everything else is in the free plugin.

The honest verdict

So which should you pick?

Choose Flarum if…

You want a fast, focused forum, you are not tied to WordPress, and you are happy to run a separate PHP application on PHP 8.3 or newer. For a pure discussion board, Flarum is simpler than a full community platform and costs nothing in licence fees.

Our pick, honestly stated

Choose BuddyNext if…

Your site is WordPress and you want the community to live there: one login, one theme, one admin, with forums from Jetonomy alongside the feed, spaces, courses and events. You would rather not run and update a second application.

Try it on a live demo community

One click builds a private copy of our demo community, with members, spaces and posts already in it. InstaWP asks for an email to create it, it lasts four hours, and nobody else sees what you change.

What to try in the demo

  1. Open the activity feed and write a post, then reply in a thread, the daily loop your members will use.
  2. Open a space and look at who can see and join it, and how forum discussions sit beside the feed.
  3. Open the admin side and look at the moderation queue and settings, the controls you would run day to day.

Honest answers

Questions buyers ask first.

BuddyNext or Flarum: which should I choose?

Choose Flarum if you want a fast, focused forum, you are not tied to WordPress, and you are happy to run a separate PHP application on PHP 8.3 or newer. For a pure discussion board, Flarum is simpler than a full community platform and costs nothing in licence fees. Choose BuddyNext if your site is WordPress and you want the community to live there: one login, one theme, one admin, with forums from Jetonomy alongside the feed, spaces, courses and events. You would rather not run and update a second application.

Is Flarum a WordPress plugin?

No. Flarum is standalone forum software written in PHP, with its own database and its own login. You host it separately from WordPress. BuddyNext is a WordPress plugin, so it runs inside the site you already have.

Is Flarum free?

The software is free and open source under the MIT licence, and the project is supported by donations. You still pay for your own server. BuddyNext has a complete free tier with an optional Pro license on top.

Does BuddyNext have forums?

Yes, through Jetonomy, a forums and Q&A plugin from the same team. The bridge is in BuddyNext Free, so threaded discussion sits next to the feed and spaces. Flarum's forum is the more focused product if discussion is all you need.

Which one is better for a pure discussion forum?

If you do not use WordPress and only need discussion, Flarum is a lean, fast choice. If your site is WordPress and you want members, forums and other community features under one login, BuddyNext is the better fit.

Can I run Flarum next to my WordPress site?

Yes, as a separate application, usually on its own subdomain. Members then have two accounts unless you connect them with an extension. If you want one login and one theme, BuddyNext avoids the second system.
