How to warn, strike or suspend a member in BuddyNext, step by step. From a reported item in Community Admin, then Moderation, the More menu holds Warn author, Strike author, Reverse last strike and Suspend author. Warn author and Strike author each ask for the message or reason the member will read. Under BuddyNext, then Automation, then Controls, the Strike system sets how many strikes lead to a warning notice (2), an automatic suspension (5) and, if you switch it on, a permanent ban. Suspending asks for a reason the member will see, an optional note, a length of 1, 7, 30 or 90 days or Indefinite, and whether to hide their posts. BuddyNext, then Moderation, then Suspensions lists suspended members with a Lift suspension button, and the member sees the reason and end date on their Account status page.

In this tutorial you will warn, strike or suspend a member in BuddyNext. These are the actions a moderator takes on a person, from the lightest to the heaviest. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin, and a moderator or administrator account. It takes about three minutes. There are six steps. Warn a member. Issue a strike. Set what strikes lead to. Suspend a member. Lift a suspension. Then see it as the member. Step one. Warn a member. Open Community Admin, then Moderation. On a reported item, click the three-dot button to open More. Warn author sends the member a warning. Nothing is restricted. It is a recorded notice that they crossed a line. Click it, and a box asks for the message the member will read, already filled in. Edit it, then click Send warning. Step two. Issue a strike. In the same menu, Strike author records a counted strike against the member, and tells them. It asks for a reason first. The member can read it on their Account status page. Strikes add up. While a member has an active strike, the menu also offers Reverse last strike, for a strike given by mistake. Step three. Set what strikes lead to. In your WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, then Automation. On Controls, under Strike system, are three numbers. Strikes before warning starts at two. From then on, the strike notice tells the member a suspension is close. Strikes before suspension starts at five. At that count the member is suspended automatically, with no end date. Strikes before permanent ban is off until you tick its box. A reversed strike no longer counts towards any of them. Step four. Suspend a member. Back in the queue, the last item of the More menu is Suspend author. It opens this box. First choose a reason. The member will see it. Add a note if it helps. With the reason Other, a note is required. Then set the length. One day, seven, thirty or ninety days, or Indefinite. It starts on seven days, and by default only admins can choose Indefinite. Tick Hide their posts while suspended to take their posts out of view as well. Then click Suspend. Step five. Lift a suspension. In your WordPress admin, open Moderation, then Suspensions. It lists every member who is suspended now, with the reason, who did it, and when it ends. A suspension with an end date lifts itself. To end one early, click Lift suspension on its row. Step six. See it as the member. A suspended member gets a notification and an email. Both lead to this page, Account status. Only they can see it. It shows the reason you chose, the day the suspension ends, and what they cannot do. Post, comment, or react. They can still read the community. That is all six. A member warned, a strike issued, the strike numbers set, a member suspended, a suspension lifted, and the member's own page seen. You now have a fair ladder for members who break the rules. Next in this series: Handle a suspension appeal.
