In this tutorial you will choose who can do what in BuddyNext. For each action, such as posting or creating a space, you pick the lowest role that is allowed to do it. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin. The starting choices suit most communities, so change only what you need. It takes about three minutes. There are five steps. Open Roles and Capabilities. Read the four choices. Go through the groups. Give a member a community role. Then save, or restore the defaults. Step one. Open Roles and Capabilities. In your WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, then Members, then Roles and Capabilities. There are three community roles, ranked Member, Moderator, Admin. A higher role can do everything a lower one can. Site administrators always have full access, so you cannot lock yourself out here. Step two. Read the four choices. Every action has one list, named Minimum role. All members means every signed-in member. Moderators and up. Admins only. And Off, which leaves the action to site administrators alone. Step three. Go through the groups. Posts and activity comes first. Posting, commenting, reacting and scheduling start on All members. Delete anyone's post or comment starts on Moderators and up. Editing anyone's post or comment, and posting site-wide announcements, start on Admins only. Spaces covers creating, joining, posting in and moderating spaces. Connections covers following and connection requests. Under Profiles, Edit anyone's profile starts on Admins only. Moderation is last. Report content is open to all members. Reviewing the queue, resolving reports, strikes and suspensions start on Moderators and up. Suspending with no end date, and deciding appeals, start on Admins only. Step four. Give a member a community role. Everyone starts as a Member. To raise someone, open Directory, click Edit on their row, and scroll to Community role. Choose Member, Moderator or Admin. It is separate from the WordPress role higher on the screen, and it is saved with the profile, when you click Save changes. Step five. Save, or restore the defaults. Back on Roles and Capabilities, click Save changes at the foot of the page. The new rule applies at once, on the site and in the app. Restore defaults puts every list back to its starting choice. One thing to know. With BuddyNext Pro membership plans, a plan can take an action away from a member, such as scheduling posts. A plan never adds one that this screen withholds. That is all five. Roles and Capabilities opened, the four choices read, the groups gone through, a community role given, and the changes saved. You now decide who can do what, for the whole community. Next in this series: Shape the profile About tab.
