In this tutorial you will group members with member types in BuddyNext. A type shows as a badge on the member, and filters the member directory. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin. It takes about three minutes. There are five steps. Open Member Types. Add a type. Choose the two switches. Give a member a type. Then check the directory as a member. Step one. Open Member Types. In your WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, then Members, then Directory, and click the Member Types tab. Defined types lists each type with its badge, how many members have it, whether it filters the directory, and whether members can pick it themselves. Step two. Add a type. Under Add member type, type a name. It is the text on the badge, and the name in the directory filter. Pick a colour for the badge. The preview beside it shows how it will look. The description is a note for you. Step three. Choose the two switches. Show as directory filter tab is ticked for a new type, so the type appears in the filter on the Members page. Allow members to self-assign is not ticked. Tick it, and members can pick this type on their own Edit Profile screen. Leave it, and only you can give it out. Then click Add. Step four. Give a member a type. Click the Members tab, find the member, and click Edit on their row. Scroll to Member type, and choose from the Type list. A member has one type at a time, so a new one replaces the old one. It is saved with the rest of the profile, when you click Save changes on this screen. And if you ever delete a type, the members who had it are left with no type. Step five. Check the directory as a member. Sign in as a member and open Members. The type filter lists every type that has the filter switch on. Choose one, here Contributor, and only those members are shown. Each of them carries the badge on the card, and on their profile. That is all five. Member Types opened, a type added, the two switches chosen, a member given a type, and the directory checked as a member. Your members are now grouped in a way everyone can see. Next in this series: Let members follow each other.
