In this tutorial you will set up the member directory in BuddyNext: the Members page where people find each other. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin. The directory is there as soon as the plugin is active. It takes about three minutes. There are four steps. Open the Members page. Search, filter and sort. Set the number of columns. Then know who is listed. Step one. Open the Members page. Sign in as a member and click Members. The page counts the community, and shows each person as a card. A card has the picture, the name and the headline, with Follow and Connect buttons, so a member can act without opening the profile. The tabs above switch between All members, the people you follow, and your connections. Step two. Search, filter and sort. Type in the search box, and the cards narrow as you type. It looks at names, headlines and bios, and at the public values of any profile field you made searchable. The first list filters by member type. It shows the types you have set up, here Contributor and Staff. The second list sorts the cards. Newest first, Alphabetical, Most active, or Recently active. Online only keeps the people who are on the site now. Step three. Set the number of columns. Now the site owner. In your WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, then Settings, then General, and find Member directory columns. It sets how many cards sit in a row on a desktop screen. Auto fits as many as the width allows, or pick two, three or four. It starts on three, and still drops to fewer on a tablet or a phone. Then click Save changes. Step four. Know who is listed. There is no list for you to keep. Every member is in the directory unless they leave it. As a member, open Settings, then Privacy, and find Show me in the member directory. A member who switches it off is taken out for everyone. Suspended members are left out too, and people who have blocked each other do not see each other there. That is all four. The Members page opened, search, filters and sorting used, the columns set, and who is listed explained. Your members can now find each other. Next in this series: Group members with member types.
