How to See New Activity Without Reloading in BuddyNext

How new activity reaches an open page in BuddyNext, step by step. While the Activity feed is open, BuddyNext checks for new posts about once a minute and shows a pill above the feed; click it and the new posts appear at the top of the feed. The bell checks for new notifications every thirty seconds and shows a count by itself. Site owners can turn the pill off with Show new-posts indicator on BuddyNext, then Engagement, then Social. BuddyNext Pro adds Realtime, which connects a Pusher-protocol server so new posts, reactions, comments and notifications are pushed to open pages.

In this tutorial you will see new activity without reloading in BuddyNext. An open page checks for what is new, and tells the member. You need BuddyNext, the free plugin. The last step is about Realtime, which needs BuddyNext Pro. It takes about two minutes. There are four steps. Watch for new posts. Watch the bell. Turn the indicator on or off. Then know what Pro adds. Step one. Watch for new posts. Sign in as a member and open Activity. While this page is open, BuddyNext checks for new posts about once a minute. When another member posts, a pill appears above the feed, and says how many new posts are waiting. The feed does not jump while you read. Here it reads, one new post, click to show. Click the pill, and the new post appears at the top of the feed. Step two. Watch the bell. The bell in the header checks for new notifications every thirty seconds, and more often for a minute after you click anywhere on the page. When someone comments on your post, follows you or mentions you, the red count on the bell goes up by itself. Here a comment has just arrived. One new notification. Click the bell to read what is new. Step three. Turn the indicator on or off. In the WordPress admin, open BuddyNext, Engagement, then Social. Find Show new-posts indicator. It is on by default. Turn it off, then click Save changes, to stop the pill and the checks behind it. The bell is not affected. Step four. Know what Pro adds. Everything so far is in the free plugin, and works by checking at intervals. BuddyNext Pro adds Realtime, under Realtime and Push. Realtime connects your site to a server that pushes updates to open pages. The Setup guide lists servers you can host yourself, and hosted ones. With a server connected, new posts, reactions, comments and notifications are pushed to members, without waiting for the next check. Enter its Host, App I D, Key and Secret under Connection. That is all four. New posts watched for, the bell watched, the indicator switch found, and what Pro adds understood. Your members now see what is new without reaching for the reload button.
